Quarry Tales: Ingleborough Dales

This is an oral history project by Quarry Arts to record the stories and memories of the quarrying and mining industries in the Ingleborough Dales and to engage the communities around Ingleton and Horton-in-Ribblesdale.

It is part of Stories in Stone, a programme of conservation and community projects developed by the Ingleborough Dales Landscape Partnership, led by the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust (YDMT) and supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

Five primary schools were involved:

  • Bentham Community Primary School – class 4
  • Clapham Church of England Primary School – Juniors
  • Giggleswick Junior School – Year 5
  • Horton-in-Ribblesdale Church of England (Voluntary Aided) Primary School – whole school
  • Ingleton Primary School – Year 6

The school activities took place between September 2016 and October 2017; each school having a programme devised specially for them. The schools were offered the opportunity for the children to keep a scrapbook of their work for the Arts Award Discover.  Quarry Arts specialises in approaching quarrying from an arts perspective to assist in understanding and appreciating the extraction industry.

In Quarry Tales projects this oral history project provides an opportunity for children to see the industry in the context of the significant changes during the last 80 years. Quarrying is important and necessary for 21st century living. By listening to and talking with those involved in the industry and reflecting on the issues of quarrying in a national park they gain insights and appreciation of the challenges facing the industry and its impact on their community.
